We completed the process and even won a Pelican Award from the North Carolina Coastal Federation for our efforts and for being good stewards of the land we live, work, and play on.
We worked tirelessly for over a year to poll our community members, explain that zoning would protect us from uncontrolled, high density development. And we spent a year of our lives doing just that. Thank goodness for the National Park Service! We’d be just another Atlantic City or Miami without them!īack in 2007, Members of the Manns Harbor Community were asked to assist the Dare County Planning Office to zone our community the way WE THE PEOPLE wanted to see our futures. Over-development threatens our very way of life the quality of the water the fish and our children swim in to experience an offshore fishing day and still catch “the big ones” out there the ability to have a stable tourism economy for visitors who come and expect cleanliness and wildlife viewing opportunities of all kinds to eat locally caught delicious, fresh seafood prepared by the finest cooks on the East Coast and to walk and drive on open stretches of unpolluted beaches with plenty of open space to clear our minds from the hectic pace of life in our last remaining vestiges of the natural world….our national parks. We’ve always been a “welcoming people” for over 150 years! The Outer Banks economy was built on the backs of native families who commercial or recreational fished the surroundings waters provided lodging for opened and ran the grueling business of restaurant work to feed many hungry mouths that came helped the Wright Brothers build hangers and fly their crazy machines into the air that went on to change the world, and we welcome millions annually who visit three iconic national parks that we are so blessed to have in our back yards! It is truly the “goodliest land” as the early English colonists described.
I have always loved to “fight the good fight” for justice and for the right reasons.
